Minnesota rehires Vänskä


The Minnesota Orchestra has rehired Osmo Vänskä as its music director. The Finnish conductor, who raised the stature of the orchestra after his engagement in 2003, resigned in frustration last October, a year into a lockout of musicians in one of the longest-running labor disputes in American musical history.

Vänskä has signed on for two more years, taking the same 15 percent pay cut that Minnesota Orchestra musicians accepted in settlement of the dispute, reports Graydon Royce of the Star Tribune of Minneapolis:
