'Audience for opera is not increasing'


As the Metropolitan Opera faces tough labor negotiations, its general manager, Peter Gelb, offers a grim assessment of the financial state of the business and future prospects of the art form in an interview with the German radio service Deutsche Welle:

Eye-popping factoid: Gelb says that Met choristers receive, on average, annual compensation of $300,000, one-third of that in medical and pension benefits.
