SCOUTING REPORT

* In and around Richmond: Bruce Stevens performs along with five colleagues in a June 15 program marking his retirement from Second Presbyterian Church after 16 years as its organist. . . . The Richmond Philharmonic gives a summer concert of light classics and swing tunes, June 19 at The Gardens at Sunday Park, Brandermill, in Midlothian. . . . The Richmond Choral Society presents “Summersings” – performances with audience participation – of the Requiems of John Rutter on June 21 and Gabriel Fauré on June 28, both at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. . . . Centenary United Methodist Church presents its Centenary Festival Choir and Orchestra, led by Stanley M. Baker, in music by the 18th-century Portuguese composer Antonio Leal Moreira on June 26. . . . The Castleton Festival comes to Richmond for the first time, with festival maestro Lorin Maazel conducting excerpts from The Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess” and Bizet’s “Carmen,” featuring mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves and other singers from the festival roster, July 22 at the Carpenter Theatre of Richmond Center Stage. . . . The Richmond Chamber Players’ 2011 Interlude series presents afternoon concerts on the four Sundays of August at Bon Air Presbyterian Church.

* Festivities: Virginia’s summer festival season gets underway with the Fredericksburg Festival of the Arts’ three chamber-music programs, June 7, 9 and 10 at St. George’s Episcopal Church. . . . The Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival showcases Bach and Mozart in four concerts on June 12, 17, 18 and 19 at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. . . . The Wolf Trap Opera Company stages the a rarity, Wolf-Ferrari’s “Le donna curiose” (“The Curious Women”), on June 17, 19 and 25, and Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann” on Aug. 5, 7, 11 and 13 in The Barns at Wolf Trap, and Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” on July 22 at the Filene Center amphitheater of the national park for the performing arts near Vienna in Fairfax County. . . . The Virginia Arts Festival stages a grand finale: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, June 20 at the Scope Arena in Norfolk. (The choir and orchestra also perform on June 22 at Wolf Trap.) . . . The Castleton Festival of opera, symphony and other concerts runs from June 25 to July 24 at Castleton Farms, the Rappahannock County estate of Lorin and Dietlinde Turban Maazel, with additional performances at the Hylton Arts Center in Manassas, The Theatre at Washington, VA, and Strathmore in the Maryland suburbs of DC. . . . At Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Springs, weekend concerts begin on July 2-3 and run through Aug. 27-28. . . . The Wintergreen Festival of orchestra and chamber concerts opens on July 8 and continues through Aug. 7 at the Nelson County resort. . . . Ash Lawn Opera stages Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” and the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical “The King and I,” plus “The Barber of C’ville,” a family-friendly condensation of the Rossini opera, from July 15 trough Aug. 7 at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville. . . . The Staunton Music Festival, with performances of chamber, contemporary and early music, runs from Aug. 19-27.
