'A third world . . . not a bridge'

Mason Bates, the Richmond-bred composer and recently named co-director of a new-music initiative at the Chicago Symphony, joins Leonard Slatkin and the Pittsburgh Symphony on Feb. 19 and 20 to perform his "Liquid Interface."
