Summer calendar
Classical performances in and around Richmond, with selected events elsewhere in Virginia and the Washington area. Program information, provided by presenters, is updated as details become available. Adult single-ticket prices are listed; senior, student/youth, group and other discounts may be offered.
SCOUTING REPORT
Festivities: Classical summer festivals tend to mix the familiar and unknown, substantive and diverting,
grand-scale and intimate, formal and casual – sometimes in the same performance. All those qualities, even a few of those “sometimes” occasions, can be found in Virginia’s music festivals and summer venues this season. Bach’s Mass in B minor (Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, June 10) shares the airspace with Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” (Ash Lawn Opera, July 29-Aug. 7), Bizet’s “Carmen” (Castleton Festival, June 30-July 8) with Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress” (Wolf Trap Opera Company, Aug. 3-11). . . . There’s Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony in the chamber arrangement (!) made for Arnold Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances (Wintergreen Festival, July 7-8); Peter Schickele’s “Shleptet” (Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival, June 7); two pairings within a single week of Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Violin Sonata and Janáček’s First String Quartet, subtitled “Kreutzer Sonata” (Richmond Chamber Players, Aug. 12; Garth Newel Chamber Players, Aug. 18); Handel’s “Zadok the Priest” and Peter Maxwell Davies’ “Eight Songs for a Mad King” on the same program (Staunton Music Festival, Aug. 22); and more than one might expect in the way of contemporary music, including the premiere of Paul Moravec’s Piano Quartet (Garth Newel, July 21). Good thing gas prices have fallen.
